Google Mail in UK is Now Gmail Officially

Earlier this week, Google had posted an update today according to which, the Google Mails service available in the UK will be officially rechristened to Gmail.

This development has been announced on Monday and according to it, existing users of the @googlemail.com service will now get an option to shift their e-mail account to an @gmail.com domain. Although those who wish to stick to the good old @googlemail.com accounts will be allowed to retain their old accounts. As evident from this, the transition is totally optional, though most people will actually go ahead and take it.

After all, people in the UK have been deprived of the @gmail.com email accounts for too long now. The transition is expected to start this week and any new registrations will be made only under the @gmail.com domain.

The Gmail blog thought “Let us complicate this matter and put it simply”. In this view, they have released an estimate which says,

“gmail” is 50% fewer characters than “googlemail,” we estimate this name change will save approximately 60 million keystrokes a day. At about 217 microjoules per keystroke, that’s about the energy of 20 bonbons saved every day!

The next time you have one of those, remember to thank Google.
